The following are essential steps of Umrah.
The procedure for Umrah is as follows:
The ihram and the tawaf are the main duty (farz)of umrah while Sa’i and trimming hairs are compulsory( wajib) for the pilgrims. There are certain places appointed for the entrance of the pilgrims at Makkah. At these places’ pilgrims announce their intention to perform Umrah. This specific place is called “Miqat”.
Its wearing is preceded by ablution, complete bath, nail clipping, etc. Ihram for men consists of two unstitch white plain garments (similar to a towel or sheet). The upper one is called “Rida” and the lower part of ihram is called “izar”
One piece of cloth is wrapped around the waist and second piece of cloth wrapped around the upper part of the body.
However, ihram for women consists of their usual dress, but they are prohibited from wearing hand gloves or covering the face.
Ihram is assumed with the proper intention of making Umrah.
Ihram is a pilgrim’s garment put on at the place of “Mawaqit”.The intention here should be made verbally, as that is Sunnah: recite:
After wearing Ihram the Pilgrims should start saying Talbiya:
Before starting tawaf the pilgrims come to the corner where “Hajar Al-Aswad” is mounted. If there are a lot of people on this corner you should not come as not to hurt anyone and yourself. You should turn around the Kabah in an anticlockwise direction so that Kabah remains on their left side like the rest of the pilgrims. Now, tawaf starts at the corner of Hajar Al-Awsad(the black stone). Tawaf is the action of circling around the Kabah. Pilgrims remove ihram sheet from their armpits and put it on the left shoulder. This process is called “Iztibah”.
Now start saying :
Bismillah wa Allahu Akbar
At Rukney Yamani corner the Pilgrims recite this supplication and saying this till reach to Blackstone
Don’t pray out in a loud voice so that it does not hurt other people. When the pilgrims reach the black stone, they repeat as before until they complete seven rounds. After completion of seven anticlockwise rounds around Kabah, the pilgrims offer two rakahs, in front of Maqam e Ibrahim. In the first rakah recite Surat Al-Kafirun and in the next Rakah recite Surah Al-Ikhlas. Sometimes due to rush it becomes difficult to reach behind the Maqam e Ibrahim then the pilgrims offer the prayer at any place facing the Multazam.after two rakhs prayer it is Sunnah to drink ZamZam water facing towards Kabah and invoking Allah for greater Knowledge and what one may like).
After the completion of Tawaf, pilgrims perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwa. Sa’i is the seven times brisk walk between the two small hillocks declared by Allah as his Symbols.
The pilgrims climb the Safa hill then face the Qiblah and raise their hands towards the sky, saying Allah u Akbar three times without pointing. Sa’i process starts from Safa and ends at Marwah.
It is compulsory for (wajib) for pilgrims to brisk walk between Safa and Marwa hills .if it is left, penalty (Dam) is to be paid in the form of sacrifice or sadaqah.
Trimming or shaving hairs:
After the completion of Sa’i, seven times between the Safa and Marwa Hills the pilgrims have shaved or trimmed their hair. Women, however, don’t shave their heads. They have only a small lock of hair cut. Now the state of ihram ends there.
Completion of Umrah:
Upon completion of Umrah pilgrims are out of state and conditions of Ihram. Now pilgrims remove the Ihram grab. During the Hajj days and in Ramadan due to too many people, Umrah takes a long time about three hours or more but during months of Shawal, Muharram, and Safar it takes almost one hour other months takes normal time.
